Tips for Back to School!

“Point your kids in the right direction when they're old they won't be lost”(Proverbs 22:6)*

Summer vacations are over; it is time for children and youth to go back to school. Some parents are happy, others are sad and, still others are nervous, as it may be the first time they are away from their children. María and I have three children, ages 27, 25, and 24 and a 5 year old grandchild. We know a bit about transitioning back to school. Let me share 6 tips to remind you of things you should do during this time.

#1 Positive First Week
The first days back to school can be a bit scary for some children and youth: Who will be my teacher and will he/she be nice? Will my friends be in my new class? Will the bully or bad boy/girl be in my new class? Will I like the classroom? Will I like my new school? Try to calm their fears and assure them that whatever they may face, you will be there to help them, and they will be fine. Ask them to share every experience with you (good or bad) and, reassure them they will have the best school year they have ever had!

#2 Backpacks and Backs
Backpacks can be quite heavy with all the books to carry. Please choose the correct backpack: double strap, not overly large to make sure they do not carry more than what they need. Instruct them on how to lift, place and carry it. It is a well known fact that backpacks can hurt children’s backs; consider purchasing rolling backpacks.

#3 Leaving and Returning from School
The goal is to send them to school and to get them back home safe. If you drive your child to school: leave on time, buckle-up, drive carefully and pick-them-up on time. If he/she will take the bus, make sure they are certain of the morning and afternoon pick up schedules, to stay seated inside the bus, and take all of their belongings. If they walk, bike, skateboard or drive to school, remind your child of the rules and extra safety measures during the commute.

#4 Feed the Body & the Mind
School lunch may not be the best but it is free: it will not cost you money or time to prepare. If you have the option, prepare lunch for your child or supplement it with healthy snacks. Food is the fuel our body and minds use to keep us going, low octane gas has less power than high octane – it will cost more but it will produce better results. There is plenty of information on healthy foods and snacks on the internet, so take time to feed your child well.

#5 Homework and Free Time
As you know, every child has homework. Talk to your child and establish their homework time when it will be good for both of you. They will most likely need your help. That means mom, dad or both, and the child will need to turn the TV off and do homework. Your child also needs free time to play, exercise, relax, fun and time to relate with peers is part of life.

#6 Time for Bed
I know that most of us enjoy watching a favorite program, talking on the phone, playing video games. Children and youth especially want these when it’s time to go to sleep. However, if they do not sleep the right amount of hours, their body and minds will not recuperate and recharge for the next day. For the sake of your son and/or daughter, make them go to bed! Some people are night owls and some are roosters – some like to stay up late and others rise early. Regardless, they need sufficient sleep.

I know that raising children is hard work, at times very frustrating and always, time consuming. But, I would like to leave you with these words from the Bible: “Don't you see that children are God’s best gift? The fruit of the womb His generous legacy?” (Psalm 127:3)*. Both María and I feel privileged and honored to be the parents of Neri, Isaac and Rebeca; and now the grandparents of Annalie. They are truly our best gifts from God!
